Summer Shadowboxes

It's been too long and summer is now on the downside...sigh!! I've had some very....interesting projects come in that called for some tricky shadowboxes. It has really kept me on my toes....brain engaged...which is good, they say the mind is the first thing to go??!!

This box consisted of a shadowbox with extender and then fitted with another shadowbox flipped upside down with the rabid holding the metal object at the back....7" in all!!

By far , creating shadowboxes are my favorite...even when they are a rush order (K.M.!!)....the finished product never ceases to be more than expected...LOVE THAT!!

Making room for moulding!!

Beveled Edge is so excited to be adding a new line of moulding. We have had to carpet two more walls in the store and while we were at it we recovered the back assembly table...facelift!! I love the smell of new carpet...they should make a car-tree smelly thing of it. The line of moulding also includes new liners in a fabulous black and umbria.

Dan's Carpets did a wonderful job hanging the new walls and covering the table. A big shout out to them!!

Come on by and take a peek at the new styles and colors...we are loving them!!

Sentimental Cross Stitch...

There is nothing more satisfying than creating something with your own hands...so imagine a piece of hand work that is done for the purpose of embracing a memory of a loved one. Gayle did just that...

I'm excited to get this back to her in AZ!! Thank you for letting me frame this for you and thank you for all you did while I visited!!

Not just for artwork...

Lisa is a lapidarist....rock guru...she brought in some old slotted cases she found at an antique shop to store and organize her stones. Since her workshop gets very dusty she wanted lids on them (or doors if she chooses to hang them) to keep the dusting of the little compartments to a minimum. She wanted to keep the "old" feel so we picked a matching barnwood.

I took an outside measurement of the case and matched the outside measurement to the frame. Then siliconed glass in the rabbet and hinged the frame to the box using brass hinges which looked aged.

Each box is a different size and some have additional side pieces which makes the hinging a bit difficult but the finished product is exactly what she wanted and even exceeded her expectations....i LOVE when that happens!!

Mounting and Framing of canvas...

We recently received two reproductions of artwork by Gustav Klimpt....The Kiss and Water Serpents II. They came from a customer serving in Afghanistan. He purchased them online and had them mailed to us in art tubes.

The paintings are wonderfully pop-y in color with accents of bright golds and bronzes. They followed the originals well but had a flare of the copy cat artist's take of Klimpt's pieces.

Since they came rolled they needed to be mounted first before framing. Up until a few years ago the canvas being made was very natural and it was easily stretched then made super taught by a soft spray of water which made the linen tighten. Now the man-made canvas won't do that as water will just bead and roll off waxey "fabric". So what I've found to keep it nice and tight and cost effective is mounting on a hard board like masonite. It also protects the canvas from being poked through when moving the artwork or a sugar crazed child with a pencil!!

I can't wait for Cory to come home....he's suppose to hop a helicopter in three days...not only am I grateful for his sacrifice so I can keep living the American Dream, but I'm thankful for his safe tour of duty. Hurry home Cory we have sushi to eat and art to admire!!

Stitch in time....

For all you nimble fingered, eye strained, weavers of art....this blog is for you!! I'm going to lay down a few ground rules of stitching for posterity with the end means of framing.

When purchasing your fabric remember to give at LEAST 1.5 inches of selvage for stretching and pinning PAST the image size...which means...your stitching image may be 5x7 and you want a 3/4" boarder of your linen showing before your matting begins (that adds up to 6.5 x 8.5) NOW tack on another 1 1/2 inches to each side for stretching and pinning purposes. 9.5 x 11.5 is the size of fabric you should begin to stitch with.

You can zig-zag or serge the edges so they don't fray....that's a nice touch to work with, BUT if you have 6" of excess Aida cloth we are going to trim it or you'll have a fat bump of fabric bulging out the dust paper backing. (*shudder*)

Remember when your piece has heavier side by side stitches in some areas and sparse or bare patches in others the tendency of the fabric is to pull and become tight which means it's harder to square up your piece when pinning it. Be consist ant in your stitch tension.

Embroidery hoops leave a mark!! Invest in some scroll frames.

We are framers not dry cleaners!! Please don't expect a pristine stitchery if you let your cat sleep on your stitching basket and every neighbor and family member man handle while ooooo'ing and ahhhhhh'ing over your hard work without washing their hands first. Launder it before you bring it in please.

And finally please...Please...PLEASE remember...you have spent countless hours on this piece, make it last, use conservation products when framing. Spend a little extra because your efforts are worth the rag mats and museum glass!!

P.S. We highly recommend you choose Beveled Edge Framing :)

Break

I got an amazing camera for Christmas and when I get a little....little is the operative word here...smidgen of time I like to go out and about to shoot. There is a pond where waterfowl gather just a mile or so from my shop. Around the pond are varies trees, and when the inversion/fog moves in they get covered with frost. When the fog burns off and the sun hits them just right it's like being in the most vast diamond store...it's breath taking!! I especially love the weeping willows. I haven't gotten a day like that yet, but I did take some time to go shoot the birds and do a little jump session. My partner in crime for this outing is my neighbor Rick Smith who is quickly becoming well known in the jumping circles. I thought you all would like to see what is on the other end of all those amazing jump pics he masterfully captures!!

Cuts like a knife...

I'm not exactly sure of the whole story behind this knife but from what I could tell...Girl brings in knife to shadowbox for a Valentine's gift for her fiance. Knife was made by someone very close to Fiance and has a lot of sentimental value. Fiance likes to show knife off so Girl wants the knife to be removable. Hmmmmmm...... so, I'm building a shadowbox where the rabbet will be the back of the box and will hold the weight of the knife then I'll build a separate frame the exact outside dimensions as the shadowbox and hinge it will a piano hinge. The box will be lined with suede as close to the same color as the knife scabbard as I can get it. Between the suede and the backing (I think I'll use peg board, light yet sturdy) I'll hide a piece of hardware that I can manipulate just enough to poke a small part of it through the suede and use as a cradle to hold knife and scabbard.

Whew!!....here we go!!

TV Morning Antics

Well it was quite the morning. We were all there on time but the film crew was a little late...we were just beginning to wonder if they were gunna' bail when Mr. Casey Scott waltzed in all curly blonde hair under a baseball cap and grinning from ear to ear. Someone said his nickname is the "village idiot" awwwwwwe....he is almost like a lost puppy...

It was a lot of standing around for 3 hours and then one sided banter between Casey and the mic...we couldn't hear what Ron and Mary were saying in the studio??

We got a few phone calls even before the segment ended but one of them was Casey's stalker??!! YIKES!!...I think I'll stick to framing, thank you!!

I hope this will give the custom sports memorabilia a great kick start for 2010!! Thanks McGee's Stamp and Trophy for a great morning and next time let's get breakfast brought in!!

They are amazing at their name plates, corporate awards, rubber stamps of all kinds, and traditional engraving on almost any surface. We are amazing at our shadowboxes....so imagine how their name plates look in our boxes!! Chanel 2 morning News will be doing live spotlights Monday morning from 5-8 from the Midvale store. Matting Makeover

A great way to get a new look and feel in your art AND save a bunch of money is just change the mats and/or frame. If you have wisely chosen art that you LOVE you won't want to get rid of it...but we do tend to update our homes and color trends change in our furniture and wall color. Don't be afraid to make you art and investment. If you love something and it's expensive remember that over the life span it's worth doing the more expensive fabric mat vs. the paper mat because the depth and richness is WORTH it. The bigger/fatter/tastier frame is WORTH it. DON'T go cheap on your glass, it will protect the image for YEARS!! Conservation or museum glass will keep your image from fading and discoloring over time...it's the difference of a few years or 50+ years...it's WORTH it!!

Guess what....you are WORTH it and it doesn't make your art expensive...it makes it priceless!!

Jersey Shadowboxes

I just picked up three football jerseys to frame....Ocho Cinco, Drew Brees, and Adrian Peterson. They are all signed and have authenticity papers, but the Adrian Peterson jersey also came with a photograph of him signing the jersey. Very cool because you could see the signature and could tell it was THAT SHIRT...pro football player, big diamond earrings....but the funny part was he was signing it in someones kitchen and it looked like one of those bad 4-plexes over on the southwest side of Provo that 100 years ago I actually lived in. Bad fake oak cabinets and cheap stove...I was thinking "hurh?"....is this some black mail scam someone has Peterson over a barrel on??....you would think a major Pro player would have some 500 sq ft man-cave-office to be signing his jerseys in???

Never the less I love framing these, it's hard not to put on the jersey and take my pic wearing them before I start on the framing.....no....I've....never.....done.....that! ;) Okay maybe just the Michael Jordan's college jersey with the championship bracket embroidered on it that he signed from the winning game!!

Beveled Edge Framing does some contract work for another local framer who is amazing at their frame making "master frame makers", but chooses not to do mat cutting or carry glass. We do a better job at assembling/finishing these projects because we do the whole dust paper backing and have all the glazing stickers and yadda yadda yadda. I LOVE doing work for Krieger/Ricks because they get the most amazing original art sent to them to frame. They make high-high end frames that are hand made and hand guilted and overlay corners and spandrels http://www.krieger-ricks.com/ take a peek for yourself. SO...the art that goes into these amazing beautiful-expensive frames isn't the run of the mill what you see everyday art. OLD and ORIGINAL and NOT chocolate box art (Ugg!!) I just finished a set of 5 pieces that a guy purchased from Christies...isn't that such a PBS or only in the movies thing you hear??!! WOW!!...it was some very cool art!! One was even a pig skin parchment in German that was used for some kind of official message sent during WWII, rolled and then wrapped with a 1.5" ribbon sealed with melted wax. I tell you I get giddy when projects like that walk thru my door!!
My favorite part of this order is the owner/customer knew how priceless originals are and used the best glazing available...Can I tell you how much I love museum glass??!! As much as I love original art!!

MLK Continued...

So the artwork got picked up today from the shop and I'm hoping someone with an even better camera than mine (which will be hard to do 'cause I got an amazing one for Christmas) will take some shots of the artwork hung...I'm hoping to find time to go there and take a look up close and personal!!

Today I picked up a wristband and ticket to last weeks SLN with Charles Barkley from my great friend Chris S.. The trade is now in my favor the sport bike rental!! The O Jerusalem was picked up and my customer LOVED it. I also delivered the 7' x 1' panorama frame to Kenny for his customer...it was a great day!!

This is it!! Day one of my new venture to tell the world about what I do, give advice, show tricks of my trade, and hopefully expand my circle of friends and customers. This week we were frantically trying to get a rush order out for UVU. Artwork for their SIXTEENTH ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.COMMEMORATION. http://www.uvu.edu/hass/mlk/ We didn't know we had the go ahead until the day I left for vacation. Allison from UVU brought in the artwork on Tuesday the 5th...the moulding arrived the 6th...and the next three days were spent chopping, nailing, and assembling like mad women. Project finished Friday morning @ 11am, we made the due date. Allison wasn't able to find anyone to sign the check!!...so...now it's Saturday...will they be picked up?? Photos to be posted soon!
